BTC Bonus: Harvey

• August 24th, 2011

In the early days of American Players Theatre, APT company members routinely put on a variety show for the community and themselves. In the 1984 event, Jonathan Smoots and Lee Ernst performed an excerpt from Harvey by Mary Chase. This is a charming little piece of fun.

Jonathan Smoots celebrates his 22nd season with APT this year. Favorite roles include: last season's Andrew Undershaft in Major Barbara and Marcus Hubbard in Another Part of the Forest, others include Deeley in Pinter's Old Times, Bottom in Midsummer, Apemantus in Timon of Athens, Brutus, Friar Lawrence, Sir Harcourt in London Assurance, also, Sir Toby Belch, Macbeth, Gloucester (Lear), Malvolio, Falstaff (Merry Wives), and Theseus/Oberon. Jonathan has performed frequently with his wife Laura Gordon and other good friends at the Milwaukee Rep, most recently as Pete/Neal/John in Laura's extremely successful production of Speaking in Tongues and as Mr. Lockhart in last season's The Seafarer. For more than twenty five years his work as an actor and director has been seen on many Milwaukee stages and at various universities.

Lee E. Ernst was an associate artist and company member with APT for 20 years during which time he played over 70 roles including Hamlet, Cyrano, Benedick & King Lear. He is currently a member The Milwaukee Rep’s Resident Acting Company where he has been seen as Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman, Leon/Nick in Speaking in Tongues, The Emcee in Cabaret, Sharky in The Seafarer, Quimby in Seven Keys to Slaughter Peak and The Postman in The Government Inspector. Lee has also played leading roles with Madison Repertory Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, New American Theater, Kansas City Repertory Theatre, Arizona Theatre Company and ACT. Currently coming off of Jessep in "A Few Good Men", Bingham in "Fox on the Fairway" at Peninsula Players, and Directing "Hamlet" at Texas Shakespeare, Lee will be playing Vince Lombardi in "Lombardi" (opening October 11) at Milwaukee Rep; then Cratchit in "A Christmas Carol", Atticus Finch in "To Kill A Mockingbird", Fight Director and TBD in "Othello" as well as starring in "Picket Charlie", a short film by Spot Filmworks- shooting in April/May 2012.

Ep. 5: Susan Sweeney’s Text Message

• August 5th, 2011

One of the essential aspects to the work produced at American Players Theatre is a diligent attention to language. In order to bring the works of Shakespeare, Sheridan, Coward, and Shaw vibrantly to life, APT invests a significant amount of time and energy solely on the language with the help of Voice and Text coaches.

Susan Sweeney is arguably one of the best text coaches in working in American Theatre today and also happens to be head of the Voice/Text Department of APT.

Here’s a deeper look into what we do to bring complicated and powerfully poetic language to life for the stage!

MUSIC & ADDITIONAL RECORDINGS: Jonathan Smoots reading A Midsummer Night's Dream (American Players Theatre: 30, Play On). David Daniel & Eric Parks perform As You Like It (American Players Theatre 2010). The Green Hornet (1946). Abbott & Costello. Danny Kaye sings "Bloop Bleep" (Danny Kaye Sings "Hans Christian Andersen" and Other Favourites). Bing Crosby & Louis Armstrong perform "Brother Bill"(Bing & Satchmo).
